The 7th Annual Scope it Out 5K Run/Walk for Colon Cancer Awareness will be held Sunday, March 25, 2012 in heart of Washington, D.C. The race course starts and ends at Freedom Plaza and will take runners and walkers up scenic Pennsylvania Avenue to the U.S. Capitol, bringing the Scope It Out message to the doorstep of our nation’s decision makers. We anticipate 4,000+ people will participate in the 2012 race.
Started as a tribute to Charles A. Kraenzle, the inaugural race was held in 2005 drawing more than 700 participants. The race was an effort to call attention to the test (the colonoscopy) that would have saved Kraenzle’s life if his family had been aware of its importance. The race name is an attempt to be both direct and humorous – to encourage others to talk about the need to be scoped.
The race continues to be a community effort, hosted by the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation, a Virginia based 501(c)(3). To date, the Scope It Out 5K has donated more than $620,000 to further colorectal cancer research and awareness, and more importantly, through its education and encouragement efforts, has saved lives. The race is dedicated to the men and women who have courageously battled this disease and their loved ones who aren’t afraid to tell everyone how important it is to Scope It Out!
The race continues to grow each year with a 2012 goal of raising $350,000 in race proceeds which will be donated to Chris4Life. Scope It Out 5K is one of the fastest growing races in the region and one of the largest annual colon cancer awareness events in the country.
The race’s success is a testament to the hard work of many volunteers and community/corporate supporters. Thousands of people know how important it is to....Scope It Out!
